31.08.2010: In which the Senators catch us cheating on them with the pizza delivery mascot

I’ll start by saying that we all hope the Sens’ team doctor Dr. Donald Chow will recover after his motorcycle crash this weekend. Believe it or not, I was just recently watching an old Youtube video of Chris Neil talking about Dr. Chow, and the players seem to have a lot of respect for him. (A true sign that we’re in August and need hockey back is that I’m watching Chris Neil clips on Youtube.) Anyway, the Sens’ conditioning has been praised, and a small market team without kajillions to throw around understandably puts a premium on keeping their players healthy. By all indications, Dr. Chow is great at his job. All of our thoughts with Don and his family.

Good Morning Star Shines,

These Mount Puckmores can make me feel pretty depressed. Though the recent Phoenix Coyotes one made me feel a bit better – Jeremy Roenick? I mean…I loves me some JR but…Phoenix JR? All the original six ones are bummers as they have so much history and each enjoyed a legendary player or five in the ranks at one point or the other. The Wings one was especially rough though, where Steve Yzerman (former Nepean Raider like *ahem* yours truly…uh… only…uh… the Raiders home ice is now named after him) is written about, and not even unreasonably, for his unparalleled leadership and sacrifice to a team that has been around for something like …70 years AND HOW DETROIT WAS WILLING TO GIVE US ANYONE ON THE WINGS INCLUDING YZERMAN!!!! for our Daigle pick. I remember at the time hearing about that potential Yzerman for the Daigle pick story and basically praying “please don’t do it please don’t do it!!!” RRRRRR “Sont of a bitch!” – Jean Claude Van Damme in Street Fighter the movie.

Anyway, back to Mount Puckmore…So it was Daigle, Yashin, The Good Goalie we Never Had (alright this is getting a bit much), and Alfie. Goddamn it. 3 Controversies and Alfie? I wish Peter Raymaakers put it together rather than Dany Heatley Speedwagon. I mean I appreciated that he was being self depreciating but did he really have to put that much fodder on that goddamn thing? Or is buddy with the HI-LARIOUS message board handle correct? (btw, I stupidly thought initially that his name was a crack at how Heater is the slowest goddamn skater…but its actually a zing about killing his best friend. Stay classy whoever!)  Was he Samsonite off or was he on point?

What does your Ottawa Senators Mount Puckmore look like?

Try to muscle your way past the gawking tourists at Mount Puckmore

The Hockey News, via Puck Daddy, predicts its standings for the Eastern Conference:

http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/34718-The-Hockey-News-201011-NHL-regular-season-predictions-No-9.html

They predict Ottawa will come tenth. With the caveat that they are making these predictions in fucking August, and so said predictions are thus both ridiculous and futile. Though it is August and there’s nothing else going on unless you count the women’s tennis in Montreal (which, actually, I do) and so: what do you think? Fair or unfair?

There is no Fair or Unfair, only Jarkko

Well it’s a good day for singing a song and a good day for mooooOOOooOOooovin along.

Good morning gents! Why am I so chipper considering I was up till 2 drinking on a weeknight? (note: That Mill Street Lemon Tea beer has caffeine in it J) Well, Pierre Regin is signed and my Xmas in July wishes have been granted. I suppose the obvious question posed by all blogs today is “Und how are ve feeling about yon signing?” and its our job to follow suit…I feel great about it. I just have a great feeling about this guy. He’s the kind of exciting young forward that I think many fans have been wait for to emerge. I think it’s like Conrad said a few weeks back about the Gonchar acquisition that “sometimes you’ve just got to be excited about moves.” I, sirs, am excited. Regin locked up for 2 yrs with a hit of 1M I think were going to get our moneys worth and more. He’s quick, young, has hands AND backchecks. I’d buy that for a dollar. Knowing he will be a regular in the line up gives us someone we can use in our putrid shootout. Remember the shootout? I will admit I was pretty into it at first *dodges trash being pelted at me* but now im getting a little bored of it (because the Senators arent very good at it) but we’re still going to have to deal with it regularly. Ruutu has one amazing deke that every goalie knows he’s going to use. Kovalev has a DVDs worth of dipsy doodles aaand uses the same Ruutu move every time.  Anyway, whatever, bold prediction: Regin to have breakout year and will get more points Milan Michalek.

Anyway, I was on Canuknik’s blog and have to say I got kind of excited about this interesting line combo he came up with that made me feel good about our team’s depth (see below).

Numbers and semi-colons, oh my!

Okay, so…happy trails to Kotalik, Zherdev, Higgins and Joikinen… lets make way for Alex Frolov? Oh, and Wade Redden is on the team? And Vinny Prospal is considered a first liner?
Gents, I’m sorry to punch a dead horse in the face as hard as I can over and over and over and over again but Glen Sather is the weirdest. This guys signings… he has a taste for a certain type eh? The underachieving hints of greatness but generally super unmotivated …OH SHIT something is coming in over Twitternet (copyright): It says “Henrik Lundqvuist has been drawn by horses and quartered in central park and his pieces will be divided amoung European elite leagues in exchange for Michael Nylander, Alexei Yashin, Alexandre Daigle and Patrik Stefan!

They payin everrrrrrrrrbody out here!

I suggest the following subject for today’s conversation: how the hell is a depth defenseman and a 4th round pick the highest Philly could get for Simon(e) Gagne, the next best left winger available after Kovalchuk? How does Philly not let the bidding grow after Kovalchuk signs, but give him away an hour later? And should the Sens, for whom the left winger position is one of their weakest (along with, sigh, goaltending) have gotten in on that knowing they could have thrown Nick Foligno and a 7th at them and probably landed a 40 goal scorer? Would it have been worth it for a guy with injury problems and only a year left on his deal? How could we have made it work with the cap?

I guess what I’m really asking is: do you think this lineup is set and ready to go?

Ready Freddy?
