21.07.2010: In which our insecurity about the frailty of the human condition is extended to predictions about the upcoming Senators season

I suggest the following subject for today’s conversation: how the hell is a depth defenseman and a 4th round pick the highest Philly could get for Simon(e) Gagne, the next best left winger available after Kovalchuk? How does Philly not let the bidding grow after Kovalchuk signs, but give him away an hour later? And should the Sens, for whom the left winger position is one of their weakest (along with, sigh, goaltending) have gotten in on that knowing they could have thrown Nick Foligno and a 7th at them and probably landed a 40 goal scorer? Would it have been worth it for a guy with injury problems and only a year left on his deal? How could we have made it work with the cap?

I guess what I’m really asking is: do you think this lineup is set and ready to go?

Ready Freddy?

So, randomly:

I’ve been jonesing for a circa 1993 Canadiens jersey with 33 and Roy
on the back. Trying to find something game-worn or whatever is crazy
(though perhaps not much more crazy than the prices they charge for
jerseys in general), but the NHL makes replica jerseys for $220 or
whatever that look pretty close to (though not exactly) what they
looked like in 1993. I know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who
apparently makes wicked can-hardly-tell knock-offs for $80ish.

Anyway, it’s some kind of nostalgia, connection-to-my-father thing. He
basically lived The Hockey Sweater, except he was one of those
rocket-fan kids beating up the leafs-sweater kid. And Roy was my
favourite player growing up and I was *really* happy when they won and
I was 13.

So it’s mostly dumb, but I’m mulling it. You ever get the urge? For a
guy who’s such a big senators fan I’m surprised you don’t already have
one.

That, and I want an Expos hat, a Rubick’s cube, and a 1958 Gibson
J-200 (like the one Springsteen used to record Nebraska).

Lets continue this chat over a glass of schwepps shall we?

14.07.2010: In which an honest-to-goodness discussion of RFA re-signings is derailed by our fear of honest-to-goodness discussions of RFA re-signings

I think we need a topic for today. Forecasting the remaining Free Agent Sens. Obvs we don’t know how arbitration will play out but thanks to the always informative capgeek website we can slot these last few RFA’s by age and expected production and compare to other, similar NHL’ers.

Lets get to the numbers!

12.07.2010: In which we debate starting a blog, naming it, and then find purpose in hating The Ottawa Sun; Bryan Murray parts the ocean and locates Nick Foligno’s RFA mollusk; Sheldon Souray: literally so terrible it only makes sense for him to play in Edmonton

Hey,

To the two guys I talk to the most about the Sens, I propose we have e-mail conversations about the team and then post that shit on a blog. Like our own blog, not on another person’s blog. It’ll be wonderful and terrible. And because this is Ottawa we’ll have literally dozens of readers. Waddya say.
